A summary of my high adventure Scouting trips with Troop 19, including backpacking at Philmont Scout Ranch, boating at Bahamas Sea Base, and canoeing at Northern Tier. These experiences offered unique challenges, leadership opportunities, and unforgettable memories.
In 2014, Troop 19 went on a 12-day backpacking trip to Philmont Scout Ranch in Cimarron, NM. We carried 40-pound backpacks and supplies, trekking through rain, hail, and snow. Highlights included Mt. Philips (11,742′), fishing, exploring rock formations, a Mexican-style village, and summiting the Tooth of Time. The trip was life-changing and memorable with friends and family.
In 2015, Troop 19 sailed around the Bahamas for five days. Scouts took turns steering, cooking, and maintaining the boat, saw tropical fish and a maroon tiger shark, snorkeled coral reefs, and slept under the stars with almost no light pollution. We also explored a sunken boat and met native islanders, gaining perspective on life in different communities.
In 2016, Troop 19 canoed at Northern Tier in Minnesota. Two crews paddled opposite routes and portaged canoes over long land stretches. Scouts cooked their meals, endured thunderstorms, mosquitos, and strenuous physical challenges, and enjoyed activities like ledge jumping. The trip strengthened teamwork, endurance, and leadership skills.
